Heavy floods struck the village of Kasaba in the South Kivu province, resulting in over 100 fatalities, according to local officials. Witnesses reported that torrential rains caused the Kasaba River to overflow, devastating the area around 5 a.m. local time on Friday. The floodwaters "carried everything in their path, large stones, large trees and mud," leading to significant structural damage, with at least 104 confirmed dead, as reported by Indiatimes and Al Jazeera.
The provincial health minister, Theophile Walulika Muzaliwa, highlighted challenges in rescue operations due to communication disruptions and the limited presence of humanitarian organizations, with the Red Cross being the only group on-site. The floods also raised concerns about the humanitarian response in a region already facing severe challenges due to ongoing conflicts, which intensified earlier this year, according to CBS News and TRT Global.
According to local officials, the death toll might increase as searches for missing individuals continue, with up to 50 people reported unaccounted for. The conflict and deteriorating conditions in the area have made such natural disasters particularly catastrophic in the DRC, where previous flooding incidents have claimed hundreds of lives this year alone, as noted by AA and Al Jazeera.
