India and Pakistan have formally agreed to a "full and immediate ceasefire" following escalating military confrontations that intensified over the last few weeks. US President Donald Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, stating, "After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE," according to India Times, Channel News Asia, and SCMP.
The ceasefire was confirmed shortly after by both Indian and Pakistani officials. Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated, "Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect," emphasizing that Pakistan has always sought peace without compromising its sovereignty, as reported by BBC and LA Times.
This development comes after both nations engaged in a series of attacks and counterattacks, leading to civilian casualties and significant military escalation. According to reports, up to 66 civilians have been affected during the exchanges, as noted by Newsweek and TRT Global.
While the announcement has brought some relief, analysts warn that underlying tensions remain unresolved, especially related to the Kashmir conflict, which has historically been a flashpoint between the two nations. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that further talks on a broad set of issues would commence soon, underlining the role of US mediation, according to Le Monde and Business Insider.
