  • Mexico has filed a lawsuit against Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico as 'Gulf of America' on US maps.
  • President Claudia Sheinbaum asserts that the name change violates international geography and authority.
  • The change follows an executive order by former President Trump, which has prompted diplomatic tensions.
  • Mexico's government demands the name be restricted to US continental shelf regions, not the entire gulf.
  • The lawsuit follows numerous prior warnings issued to Google regarding the name change.

Mexico has sued Google for its decision to label the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" for users of its US-based Google Maps. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the legal action at a press briefing, stating that the lawsuit had already been filed but did not reveal specific details about it. The lawsuit follows an executive order from previous US President Donald Trump that formalized the naming change, leading Mexico to object strongly, arguing that the order only applies to the US continental shelf, not the entire body of water shared by Mexico, the US, and Cuba, according to Le Monde and BBC.

During the briefing, Sheinbaum emphasized that while Mexico does not object to the term "Gulf of America" being used for US territorial waters, the entire Gulf cannot be labeled such. She articulated, "Our request is that Google apply the name 'Gulf of America' only to the areas corresponding to US territory, and use 'Gulf of Mexico' for the regions bordering Mexico and Cuba," as reported by AA and HuffPost.

Sheinbaum declared that Google had previously received warnings regarding the issue but failed to address them adequately. The executive order was signed by Trump on January 20, 2025, and subsequent legislation was voted on by US lawmakers to codify the name change further into federal law, making it a hotly debated political topic, according to Times of India and South China Morning Post.

Sheinbaum had also humorously suggested that if the US could rename the gulf, Mexico could start referring to the US as "Mexican America," further illustrating the tensions entwined in historical territorial changes, per Los Angeles Times. This issue has come to symbolize broader conflicts and national pride regarding territorial naming conventions.
