The London Marathon has achieved a remarkable milestone, receiving a staggering 1,133,813 applications for the 2026 race, which surpasses the previous record of 840,318 set for the 2025 race. Nearly 870,000 applicants are from the UK, showcasing a strong local interest, while around 264,000 entries came from overseas, according to Channel News Asia and South China Morning Post.
Hugh Brasher, the CEO of London Marathon Events, described the application total as "absolutely staggering," underlining London’s status as the most popular marathon globally. Recent events showed that more than 56,000 runners took part in the 45th London Marathon, also a new world record for the event, according to Reuters and South China Morning Post.
The recent race featured a notable achievement where Tigst Assefa set a new women's-only world record with a time of two hours, 15 minutes, and 50 seconds, adding to the event's significance, according to Reuters and Channel News Asia.
