On May 2, a significant power outage affected several regions on Bali, impacting both residential areas and the airport. State utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) confirmed that they were investigating the cause while working to restore services. According to PLN's spokesperson in Bali, "The recovery process is currently being carried out gradually," which indicates ongoing efforts to address the outage, according to Reuters and Channel News Asia.
As services were disrupted, the airport in Bali utilized backup generators to maintain flight operations, though delays were reported for several departures. Images on social media depicted traffic jams throughout the island as residents and tourists witnessed prolonged outages, further complicating recovery efforts. Bali, being Indonesia’s top tourist destination, drew approximately 6.3 million foreign visitors last year, as highlighted by local statistics, according to The Jakarta Post and Channel News Asia.
Most areas in Bali began experiencing a return to power a few hours after the initial blackout, with ongoing efforts to restore full electricity supplies particularly focused on key infrastructure such as hospitals and government offices. PLN noted that the outage was attributed to a disruption in subsea cables linking Bali's electricity grid to Java. Darmawan Prasodjo, the president director of PLN, mentioned initial indications pointing towards this cause, according to Channel News Asia and Reuters.
