President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he is nominating Mike Waltz, his former National Security Adviser, to become the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Trump expressed confidence in Waltz's capabilities, stating, "From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first" according to aa, aljazeera, and npr.
Simultaneously, Trump appointed Marco Rubio as interim National Security Adviser, consolidating his role as Secretary of State. "Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN," Trump stated in his announcement according to indiatimes and indiatimes.
Waltz's nomination comes after facing scrutiny over a mishap in which he inadvertently included journalist Jeffrey Goldberg in a private conversation discussing U.S. military strategies against the Houthis in Yemen. Although Trump initially defended him during the incident, the fallout appears to have influenced Waltz's reassignment according to aa and aljazeera.
The position Waltz is being nominated for has been vacant since Trump withdrew the previous nominee, Representative Elise Stefanik. Waltz will need Senate confirmation for this role, which adds another layer of complexity to his political future following the Signal incident according to npr and indiatimes.
