  • Over 542 civilians have been confirmed killed in North Darfur in the past three weeks.
  • The UN warns the actual death toll could be significantly higher due to ongoing violence.
  • Recent attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.
  • Reports of extrajudicial killings and war crimes have emerged amid the conflict.
  • Civilians in El-Fasher face dire conditions amidst escalating battles between armed factions.

In the last three weeks, at least 542 civilians have been confirmed killed in Sudan's North Darfur region, according to the United Nations, which warned that the true number may be "much higher." UN rights chief Volker Turk described the situation as “horror unfolding” amid a brutal civil war that has persisted since April 15, 2023, involving the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This war has triggered what some aid agencies are labeling the "world's largest displacement and hunger crises" as key cities like El-Fasher are caught in violent struggles for control, leading to extensive loss of life and suffering, according to Indiatimes, TRT World, and Al Jazeera.

The RSF, which has recently intensified its attacks on El-Fasher and surrounding areas like the Abu Shouk camp, delivered a warning of impending "bloodshed" as clashes continue with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). An attack by the RSF three days ago resulted in the deaths of at least 40 civilians, highlighting the urgent and dire situation facing those trapped amid escalating violence. Turk emphasized the need for action to protect civilians in these tumultuous conditions, as the number of reported deaths continues to rise, according to Indiatimes, TRT World, and Al Jazeera.

Moreover, alarming reports have surfaced regarding extrajudicial executions, with Turk outlining "extremely disturbing" videos that document armed men in RSF uniforms executing civilians in Omdurman. This brutality has raised international concern regarding potential war crimes, particularly as reports indicate the RSF's use of such tactics against individuals accused of collaborating with opposition forces. These developments signify the grim reality for millions in Sudan, who face not only violence but also severe humanitarian repercussions, according to Indiatimes, TRT World, and Al Jazeera.
