A man suspected of stabbing a Muslim worshipper to death in a mosque in southern France was arrested after surrendering to police in Italy. The attack occurred in La Grand-Combe, where the victim, Aboubakar Cissé, was brutally murdered while praying, raising fears of escalating anti-Muslim sentiment in France, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera.
The suspect, identified as Olivier A., born in France in 2004, turned himself in to police in Pistoia on Sunday night, two days after the crime. French prosecutor Abdelkrim Grini commented on the situation, stating, “Faced with the effectiveness of the measures put in place, the suspect had no option but to hand himself in," as reported by Le Monde and India Times.
Details surrounding the crime reveal that it was captured on video, showing the suspect boasting over the victim, and has been categorized as an Islamophobic attack by French authorities. The incident has provoked widespread outrage, prompting political leaders, including President Emmanuel Macron, to denounce the act as an assault on religious freedom, according to New York Times and Dawn.
French authorities are also emphasizing the need for increased security at mosques following the attack. Additionally, Grini highlighted that other potential motivations for the suspect’s actions are being investigated, including a fascination with death, as he suggested possible psychological factors may also be at play, according to TRT Global and Reuters.
