On Monday, an F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet slipped off the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier while being towed, sinking into the Red Sea, according to CBS News. The incident occurred in the carrier's hangar bay when the towing crew lost control and both the aircraft and tow tractor went overboard.
Officials reported that the crew members were able to bail out before the jet fell, with only one sailor sustaining a minor injury. An investigation into the mishap has been initiated by the Navy, which confirmed that the jet had an estimated value of around $60 million, according to ABC News and The Hill.
The USS Harry S. Truman had been deployed to the Red Sea for anti-Houthi operations, conducting daily military strikes against the Iranian-backed militia, reports Business Insider and India Times.
Prior to this incident, the Truman was involved in another mishap where it collided with a merchant ship in the Mediterranean, leading to the replacement of its commanding officer. This current event adds to the complications faced by the strike group, as they remain “fully mission capable,” as affirmed by Newsweek and India Times.
