China's foreign ministry announced on April 28 that there has been "no phone call" between President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, refuting Trump's claims made in a recent interview. Spokesman Guo Jiakun emphasized that there have been no consultations or negotiations regarding tariff disputes, which remain a contentious issue between the two countries, according to Reuters.
In an interview with Time magazine, Trump asserted that Xi had contacted him, stating, "[Xi]’s called. And I don’t think that’s a sign of weakness on his behalf." However, Guo Jiakun responded that, to his knowledge, "there has been no phone call between the two leaders recently," reiterating that China and the US are not currently engaging in tariff negotiations, as reported by South China Morning Post and The Jakarta Post.
The ongoing trade battle between the US and China has escalated, highlighted by Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports, which have reached as high as 145 percent on certain goods. The lack of communication reflects the heightened tensions, with both sides yet to engage in any meaningful discussions regarding these tariff issues, according to South China Morning Post and The Jakarta Post.
