Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa shattered the women's-only world marathon record at the London Marathon on April 27, winning the race in a remarkable time of 2 hours, 15 minutes and 50 seconds. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 2:16:16 set by Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir in 2022. Assefa pulled away from Kenya's Joyciline Jepkosgei towards the end, finishing almost three minutes ahead of her competitor, who clocked in at 2:18:44, while Olympic champion Sifan Hassan placed third at 2:19:00, according to Channel News Asia, Le Monde, and Reuters.
Assefa attributed her success to the warmer weather conditions this year, recalling that she faced challenges due to cold temperatures in the previous race. “Last year, I did have some problems with the cold... This year, the weather suited me really well,” she stated. This victory is particularly sweet for Assefa, who finished second in last year’s event, according to Al Jazeera and Dawn.
In the men's race, Kenya's Sabastian Sawe won decisively with a time of 2:02:27, marking his first major marathon victory. Sawe broke away strategically during a crucial moment around 10 kilometers from the finish, distancing himself from a tight group of elite competitors, including Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda, who finished second in his debut marathon at 2:03:37. Last year's winner, Alexander Mutiso Munyao, and Abdi Nageeye were close behind, tied for third at 2:04:20, as reported by Channel News Asia and Reuters.
The wheelchair races also saw impressive performances, with Marcel Hug securing his sixth title in 1:25:25 and Catherine Debrunner, just two seconds shy of her world record, winning her third title in four years at 1:34:18, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters.
