  • 17-year-old sprinter Gout Gout confirmed for World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
  • Clocked a wind-assisted 19.84 seconds to win his first national title.
  • Gout draws comparisons to Usain Bolt, representing the future of Australian athletics.
  • Also joining the Australian team are notable athletes like Eleanor Patterson and Cameron Myers.
  • Australia is set to host the Brisbane Olympics in 2032, adding excitement to Gout's rise.

Teen sprinter Gout Gout has been confirmed on Australia's team for the World Athletics Championships scheduled for September in Tokyo. The 17-year-old, son of South Sudanese immigrants, secured his place by clocking a wind-assisted 19.84 seconds in the 200 meters during the national championships held in Perth earlier this month, winning his first national title, according to Channel News Asia, Al Jazeera, and Dawn.

Gout's impressive speed has led to comparisons with legendary Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, increasing his visibility as a promising talent in Australian track and field just seven years before the Brisbane Olympics in 2032. “I’m super excited to be picked to run the 200 in Tokyo at the World Championships,” Gout expressed confidently in an Australian Athletics statement, highlighting his anticipation for the competition ahead, according to Channel News Asia, Al Jazeera, and Dawn.

He will lead a strong team featuring other talented athletes such as Cameron Myers, who recently claimed the national title in the 1,500 meters and ran the fastest mile indoors for under-20 athletes at the Millrose Games, and Eleanor Patterson, a former high jump world champion aiming for her sixth medal in major championships. Peter Bol, who finished fourth in the 800 meters at the Tokyo Olympics, is also set to return in great form, having recently bested the national record with a time of 1:43.79, according to Channel News Asia, Al Jazeera, and Dawn.
