Early on April 24, a coordinated Russian missile attack on Kyiv resulted in at least nine deaths and over 60 injuries, marking one of the deadliest assaults during the ongoing conflict, according to Le Monde, India Times, and TRT Global. The attacks were reported to have caused damage across multiple districts of the city, triggering fires and forcing residents to seek shelter in basements.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko indicated that these attacks have severely impacted residential areas, with reports of emergency services conducting rescue operations amidst the rubble of destroyed buildings. “The search for people under the rubble is underway,” he noted on Telegram, highlighting the ongoing crisis faced by civilians, per Channel News Asia, The New York Times, and Al Jazeera.
In addition to Kyiv, the northeastern city of Kharkiv was also targeted, where at least seven missiles struck, prompting local authorities to issue warnings to residents about ongoing threats. Two people were reportedly injured in Kharkiv as well, according to mayors of both cities and reports from Ukrainian officials, including Reuters and The New York Times.
Top officials like Andriy Yermak, an aide to President Zelenskyy, condemned the strikes as acts of barbarism, urging that “the attacks on civilians must stop.” He characterized the Russian offensive as a deliberate assault on the Ukrainian populace, reflecting the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by civilians caught in the conflict, as stated in Le Monde and Al Jazeera.
