A fast-growing wildfire, the Jones Road Fire, is currently burning in New Jersey's Pinelands, having consumed over 13,250 acres and posing the risk of becoming the state’s largest wildfire in nearly 20 years, according to Channel News Asia and Dawn. As of Wednesday night, the fire is approximately 50% contained, but officials emphasize that significant rainfall is necessary to fully extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Air quality alerts have been issued in New York City as wildfire smoke is expected to reach the area amidst ongoing dry and windy conditions, according to ABC News. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service noted that strong winds could exacerbate the fire’s spread. Similarly, the National Weather Service warned that changes in wind patterns could push smoke towards urban areas, affecting sensitive populations.
New Jersey has experienced nearly double the number of wildfires so far in 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, igniting concerns about wildfire management and environmental impact. In total, there have been 662 wildfires this year, burning over 66.8 square kilometers, compared with 310 wildfires covering just 1.27 kilometers in 2024, as reported by Dawn and Channel News Asia.
Authorities are concerned that the ongoing dry weather and high winds will lead to further outbreaks, with evacuation orders previously placed affecting 3,000 to 5,000 people before being lifted. Firefighters are reported to be working nearly 24 hours a day to control the chaos, as noted by Dawn, ABC News, and Newsweek.
