South Korea's acting President, Han Duck-soo, indicated that Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok and Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun will engage in high-level trade talks in Washington this week to combat potential tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. These negotiations come as South Korea seeks to maintain its robust export relationships with the United States, essential for major companies like Samsung Electronics and Hyundai. Han emphasized the need for these discussions, stating, "The government will pursue these talks calmly and earnestly" to yield mutually beneficial outcomes, according to India Times and AA.
The talks, scheduled for April 24, are expected to address various economic issues, including trade balance, LNG cooperation, and shipbuilding, crucial for both countries. Choi noted that the discussions were set at the United States' request, aiming to strengthen the South Korea-US alliance. "I will return after opening the door" for these essential discussions, he stated at Incheon International Airport, according to Channel News Asia and AA.
As both sides prepare for potentially tense negotiations, Han acknowledged the challenges ahead, emphasizing that "these negotiations with Washington will not be easy." Meanwhile, discussions around South Korea's involvement in US efforts to curb trade with China have emerged, though the agenda remains unconfirmed. Han expressed optimism that the talks will establish a "win-win" framework through open dialogue, according to India Times and Channel News Asia.
