An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border on Saturday at approximately 12:17 PM IST, according to the Times of India. The depth of the quake was reported at 92 kilometers by the German Research Centre for Geosciences, while other agencies had slightly varying figures for magnitude and depth.
Tremors were widely felt in several regions of northern India, including Delhi-NCR and Jammu & Kashmir, prompting momentary panic among residents. A Srinagar local noted, “I felt the tremor. I was in the office when my chair shook," illustrating the alarm it caused, according to Times of India.
In Pakistan, the National Seismic Monitoring Centre reported tremors in various districts, including Peshawar, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi. Despite the widespread jolts, no injuries or damage were reported. Rescue officials stated that inspections were ongoing across multiple regions for any potential damage, as stated in Dawn.
This earthquake follows another 5.5 magnitude quake that shook parts of Pakistan and its capital just the previous week, indicating a concerning pattern of seismic activity in the area, as highlighted by geological experts who noted that minor tremors may precede more significant quakes, according to Dawn.
