Andre Onana will return as Manchester United's starting goalkeeper for their critical UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg against Olympique Lyonnais. This decision follows Onana's exclusion from the squad during the team's recent Premier League defeat to Newcastle, where they suffered a 4-1 loss while Altay Bayindir filled in during his absence, according to Channel News Asia.
Manager Ruben Amorim had opted to drop Onana after the goalkeeper faced criticism for two mistakes in the first leg against Lyon, resulting in a 2-2 draw. Former Manchester United player Nemanja Matic had labeled Onana as "one of the worst goalkeepers" in the club's history prior to the match, intensifying scrutiny on the shot-stopper. Amorim, however, has defended him, stating, "As a coach and former player, I try to do things that can help a player in this situation," according to BBC.
Despite concerns over his form, Amorim expressed his belief in Onana's readiness to return: "Sometimes we talk about managing players physically, but you also have to manage them mentally," he explained. "He had one weekend to rest, now he's ready to return to the competition," as reported by Reuters.
Onana's deputy, Bayindir, who played in his stead, also faced criticism after contributing to the goals against Newcastle. Amorim is cautious about evaluating his goalkeeping options, stating, "We need to improve every position on the field," emphasizing that there would be an assessment during the close season, according to Africa News.
In a further setback for the squad, striker Joshua Zirkzee has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury. Amorim confirmed, "Joshua is out for the season," adding that they will prepare him for the following season. The Dutch forward had managed seven goals and three assists this season, and his absence is a significant blow to the team's attacking options, per BBC.
As Manchester United looks to secure a spot in next season's Champions League, their success in the Europa League is critical, underscoring the importance of the upcoming match against Lyon, according to Channel News Asia.
