Hongkong Post Halts Shipments to the US Amid Trump Tariff Controversy

Credited from: NPR

  • Hongkong Post suspends all shipments of goods to the United States due to new tariffs.
  • Surface mail services halted immediately; air mail services will cease from April 27.
  • The postal service criticizes US tariffs as "unreasonable" and "bullying."
  • The suspension follows the elimination of the "de minimis" exemption on packages.
  • No impact on items containing only documents will be observed.

Hongkong Post announced on Wednesday that it will halt shipments of goods to the United States in response to new tariffs enacted by President Donald Trump. The service will stop accepting surface mail items destined for the U.S. with immediate effect, while airmail shipments will cease from April 27, according to Business Insider.

The decision was framed as a reaction to what Hongkong Post described as "bullying" actions by the U.S. government, stating that "the U.S. is unreasonable, bullying and imposing tariffs abusively." The postal service emphasized that it will not collect any tariffs on behalf of the U.S., according to South China Morning Post.

This move follows recent changes to U.S. tariff policies, including the elimination of the "de minimis" exemption, which allowed goods valued under $800 to enter the U.S. without taxes or duties. As of May 2, these items will now be subject to tariffs up to 120%, enhancing the financial burden on Hong Kong senders, as reported by Forbes.

The Hong Kong government has predicted exorbitant shipping fees for U.S.-bound items, indicating a significant effect on e-commerce platforms in Hong Kong that depend on these services. According to The Hill, the government plans to contact senders of unshipped items to arrange returns and refunds starting from April 22.

This decision places Hong Kong's postal operations in a complicated position amidst ongoing tensions between the United States and China, with Hong Kong's unique trade policies now coming under increasing strain, as highlighted by The New York Times.
