Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, one of the few remaining doctors in northern Gaza, has reportedly been detained after an Israeli military raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital, a facility that had been the last functioning hospital in the area during a heavy siege. His family first feared for his safety after he was taken to the notorious Sde Teiman prison. According to reports from his son, Idrees Abu Safiya, the doctor sustained serious injuries during the raid, and concerns for his safety are mounting.
For over 14 months, Abu Safiya not only treated patients but also documented the struggles faced by healthcare workers under constant bombardment and dwindling humanitarian aid. His dedication to the cause has made him a pivotal figure in the medical landscape of Gaza, as noted by health officials who emphasize the importance of having compassionate and courageous professionals like him during such tumultuous times. Describing him as the "face of the medical community" in Gaza, Dr. Zaher Sahloul, president of MedGlobal, elaborated on Abu Safiya's moral commitment to treating all injured, stating that he aims to provide equal care to both Israeli soldiers and Palestinian children.
The raid on the Kamal Adwan Hospital reportedly resulted in numerous casualties, alongside the arrest of healthcare professionals and patients alike. It prompted the World Health Organization to express its outrage, classifying the attack as a severe infringement on humanitarian standards. Amnesty International also expressed dismay at Israel's systemic targeting of healthcare workers and patients, asserting that over 1,000 medical professionals have been killed since the beginning of the conflict.
Witnesses and recently released individuals have reported that Abu Safiya endured inhumane treatment during his detention and has been subjected to various forms of torture. His family, alongside healthcare advocates worldwide, has implored international bodies to intervene on his behalf. They highlight the growing need for humanitarian aid in Gaza and stress that the continual crackdown on healthcare infrastructure is creating dire consequences for the civilian population in the region.
Calls continue for action to protect medical workers and ensure they can operate without fear of aggression, with Sahloul reiterating the need for global acknowledgment of the realities faced by healthcare staff in war zones. As the international community assesses the situation, there are renewed demands for accountability and the safeguarding of humanitarian principles in conflict areas.
