Eric Dane, celebrated for his roles in “Grey's Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” has disclosed that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle paralysis. The 52-year-old actor shared the news in an interview with People, expressing gratitude for the support of his family during this challenging time.
Dane stated, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week,” emphasizing his commitment to the HBO series despite his health struggles. He requested privacy as he navigates this next chapter with his family.
Best known for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, affectionately known as “McSteamy,” on “Grey's Anatomy,” Dane is also recognized for his recent role as Cal Jacobs in “Euphoria.” The show is set to resume production on its third season shortly, as confirmed in a report by Channel News Asia.
ALS, often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, affects approximately one in every 300 people in the United States. It gradually impairs the ability to move, speak, and eventually breathe independently, with no known cure available. Post-diagnosis, individuals typically have a life expectancy of two to five years, although some may live for decades, as noted by the ALS Association.
Dane has been married to actress Rebecca Gayheart since 2004, and they have two teenage daughters. The couple, who previously announced their divorce in 2018, reconciled earlier this year, according to a report by Newsweek.
