U.S. Space Force Commander in Greenland Removed After Vice President JD Vance's Criticism

The U.S. military has confirmed the dismissal of Colonel Susannah Meyers, commander of the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, following a visit from Vice President JD Vance that sparked controversy over U.S. relations with Denmark.

Meyers was removed from her post on April 10 due to what the Space Force described as a “loss of confidence in her ability to lead.” Officials indicated that actions that undermine the chain of command or diverge from President Trump's agenda would not be tolerated within the Department of Defense. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell emphasized this stance, stating, “Commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially as it relates to remaining nonpartisan in the performance of their duties,” according to reports from CBS News.

Colonel Meyers’ removal followed her drafting an email, shared with base personnel, that distanced herself and the base from Vance's remarks made during his March 28 visit. Vance had criticized Denmark for inadequate support for Greenland, asserting that the U.S. would be better for Greenland's security. In a post-visit email, Meyers wrote, “I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance... are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base,” as reported by LA Times.

Her critical stance raised eyebrows within the Pentagon, prompting calls for accountability. Military.com reported that her decision to connect with personnel regarding Vance's statements was viewed as an act of insubordination. Following her dismissal, Colonel Shawn Lee was appointed as the new commander. This incident reflects ongoing tensions surrounding U.S. interests in Greenland, particularly in light of Trump’s assertions about the need for American control of the island,Reuters noted.

This move follows a series of high-profile firings under the Trump administration, which has enacted significant personnel changes across military leadership ranks. Analysts question the implications of such changes on military operations and governance, as senior military leaders shift in response to political pressures.
