Kylian Mbappé's legal team has escalated tensions with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) by successfully freezing several of the club's accounts as part of an ongoing dispute over €55 million in unpaid wages.
On Thursday, legal expert Thomas Clay announced that a precautionary seizure of €55 million from PSG's accounts has been authorized, as Mbappé continues to seek payment since before joining Real Madrid last summer. According to reports, the French football star’s representatives have also appealed to the French Sports Minister and UEFA for support in closing this matter, which remains unresolved for over a year.
Delphine Verheyden, Mbappé's main lawyer, expressed concern, stating, “As the months went by, Kylian Mbappé still hasn’t been paid the missing €55 million. A decision has been taken, this time to go on the attack.” The legal representative suggested this action is not just about recovering wages; if PSG is found liable, they could risk losing their Champions League license, a significant threat given the club's ambitions.
The French League (LFP) previously ordered PSG to pay the player, but the French Football Federation deemed Mbappé's requests inadmissible due to existing civil court proceedings. PSG has remained largely silent on the matter but reportedly stated last October that they sought an "amicable solution" while preparing to bring the case to competent courts.
Mbappé’s legal actions, including a complaint for harassment against PSG regarding contract pressure, are crucial in determining the outcome of this high-stakes financial dispute, which underlines the complexities surrounding player contracts in professional football. A hearing has been scheduled for May 26, which may provide crucial developments in this case.
