Val Kilmer, the California-born, Juilliard-trained actor, has died at the age of 65, as reported by the New York Times. The cause of his death was pneumonia, according to his daughter Mercedes Kilmer.

Best known for his roles in blockbuster films such as "Top Gun," "The Doors," and "Batman Forever," Kilmer earned a reputation as one of Hollywood's most prominent leading actors during the 1990s. However, his career was often punctuated by clashes with directors and co-stars, alongside a series of less successful films that impacted his standing in the industry. Kilmer was described as temperamental, intense, and often perceived as a Hollywood bad boy.

"When certain people criticize me for being demanding, I think that's a cover for something they didn't do well," Kilmer stated in an interview with the Orange County Register in 2003. "I believe I'm challenging, not demanding, and I make no apologies for that."

His film career began with roles in "Top Secret!" (1984) and "Real Genius" (1985), but it was his portrayal of naval aviator Tom "Iceman" Kazansky in the 1986 hit "Top Gun" that solidified his status as a star. He later reprised this role in the much-anticipated sequel "Top Gun: Maverick" in 2022.

Kilmer gained critical acclaim for his role in "The Doors" (1991), in which he convincingly embodied the late Jim Morrison, the band's charismatic lead singer. To win the part, Kilmer created an eight-minute video demonstrating his singing capabilities, using his own voice in the film.

He achieved further success in the 1993 Western "Tombstone," portraying the iconic gunfighter Doc Holliday. His performance in "Batman Forever" (1995) was less favorably received, as he struggled against the film's overwhelming critics and co-stars Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey. Following this, he famously withdrew from the sequel due to personal and professional differences.

Despite facing challenges including health issues, Kilmer continued to work in the industry. Diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015, he underwent treatments that severely impacted his voice, yet he remained a dedicated figure in the film industry.

Tributes from fans and colleagues pour in as the world remembers Kilmer not just for his roles, but for the impact he made during a distinguished career. His portrayal of intense characters and engaging performances have left a lasting legacy in Hollywood.
