Val Kilmer, the iconic actor known for his roles in Top Gun and Batman Forever, has passed away at the age of 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed that he died during the evening on April 1 in Los Angeles due to pneumonia, after a long struggle with health issues stemming from throat cancer diagnosed in 2014.

Born on December 31, 1959, Kilmer rose to fame in the 1980s with memorable performances in films such as Le Monde's "Top Secret!" and "Real Genius." However, it was his portrayal of Lt. Tom "Iceman" Kazanski in the 1986 classic Top Gun that cemented his status in pop culture. Kilmer reprised this role in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, during which he faced significant health challenges.

His filmography boasts a range of iconic performances, including capturing the essence of Jim Morrison in The Doors and playing Doc Holliday in Tombstone. Critics and fans alike recognized Kilmer for his intense dedication to his craft; his Method acting often led to memorable but difficult collaborations. "I've behaved poorly. I have behaved bravely...I deny none of this and have no regrets," he stated in the documentary "Val," which examined his career and health struggles.

Tom Cruise, his co-star in Top Gun, paid heartfelt tribute during a recent appearance at CinemaCon, stating, "He loved movies and he gave a lot to all of us with his performances." Cruise led the audience in a moment of silence, expressing gratitude for having worked alongside Kilmer. He described Kilmer as a "dear friend," showcasing the respect and admiration the Hollywood community held for the actor.

Kilmer's fiercely creative spirit extended beyond acting; he was also an accomplished poet and visual artist. His loss has left a void in Hollywood, prompting numerous heartfelt messages from colleagues. "His rendition of Doc Holliday was what every actor dreams of achieving," wrote actor James Woods on social media.

Survived by his children, SCMP reports, Kilmer's journey through life is a testament to his passion and dedication to his craft. Plans for a memorial have yet to be publicly announced.
