Czech teenager Jakub Mensik made headlines at the Miami Open by defeating his childhood idol, Novak Djokovic, in a thrilling final on Sunday. The 19-year-old claimed victory with a score of 7-6(4), 7-6(4), marking his first ATP tour title and denying the former world number one the chance to secure his 100th tournament win.
Mensik, who was ranked 54th in the world, showcased his incredible talent and resilience, battling through a challenging match that had a delay of almost six hours due to rain. Djokovic, who turned 37 this year, was aiming to join the elite ranks of Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer as one of only three players to win 100 titles in the Open Era, but instead faced a formidable opponent in the young Czech.
The match featured two tightly contested sets, both decided by tiebreaks. Mensik's serve was a key weapon, delivering 14 aces that helped him quell Djokovic's hopes. "I'm never really happy to lose, but he's one of the very few players that I would be happier to lose to," Djokovic reflected, noting he was pleased to see Mensik achieving success after training with him in the past.
Despite struggling with an eye infection throughout the match, Djokovic managed to push through but admitted that he did not feel at his best. "It's unfortunate for me... it is what it is. Nothing to take away from his victory," he stated after the match.
Mensik expressed his disbelief at winning the title and credited his physiotherapist for getting him ready to compete after nearly withdrawing due to a knee injury. "To be honest, I don’t know what to say. It feels incredible," he said after the match.
This victory places Mensik among the youngest champions of the Miami Open, a testament to his growing prowess in the sport. As Djokovic continues to tally titles, he will have to wait for another opportunity to reach the coveted 100.
