Tokyo, March 29 (Reuters) - Japan's prominent fast-food chain Sukiya has announced a temporary closure of nearly all of its approximately 2,000 locations nationwide for four days starting March 31. This decision comes after alarming reports of customers finding a rat in a bowl of miso soup and a cockroach in a takeaway dish, leading to widespread concern among the public.

During a weekend statement, Sukiya, part of the dining giant Zensho Holdings, conveyed deep regret for the incidents and confirmed its commitment to addressing sanitary issues. The chain's share price fell by approximately 7% after the incidents became public knowledge. As of December 2024, Sukiya is documented to operate around 1,965 stores in Japan, surpassing its rivals such as Yoshinoya and Matsuya.

Initial reports indicated that the rat incident occurred back in January at a restaurant in Tottori, with Sukiya confirming via its website that it is taking the situation seriously.
