Initially scheduled to begin on March 31, the requirement will now take effect on April 14, providing additional time for SSA employees to receive necessary training. The agency aims to enhance service to the nation’s vulnerable populations, including seniors and individuals with disabilities.

Under the revised plan, individuals applying for Social Security Disability Insurance, Medicare, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) who cannot verify their identity online will be allowed to complete their claims over the phone without the need for an in-person visit. However, those seeking retirement, survivor, or auxiliary benefits are still required to verify their identity by visiting a field office if they cannot use the online system.

This policy change comes amid an ongoing effort to combat fraud, particularly regarding direct deposit alterations. The SSA noted that extensive fraud in the past has prompted these measures, yet many have voiced concern that such stringent requirements would disproportionately burden vulnerable demographics. The SSA also mentioned that individuals unable to use their online accounts can schedule an appointment by calling 1-800-772-1213.
