Credited from: CBSNEWS

A shocking incident has unfolded at a popular hiking destination in Hawaii, where Gerhardt Konig, a 46-year-old doctor from Maui, has been accused of attempting to kill his wife. During a hike at the Pali Lookout on Oahu, police say he struck his 36-year-old wife, Arielle, with a rock and tried to push her off the cliff after she refused to take a photo with him.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, the violent altercation occurred on Monday morning. After the incident, which took place around 10 a.m., Arielle sustained severe injuries to her head and face and was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

The police quickly launched a manhunt for Konig, issuing an alert to the public. He was arrested later that day near Pali Highway following a brief foot chase. Konig is currently facing potential charges of second-degree attempted murder, with charges pending as investigations continue.

Gerhardt Konig, a trained anesthesiologist who has worked at various medical facilities across Maui, was previously an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine. He has been suspended from his medical position while the investigation is ongoing, as confirmed by Maui Health.

This incident has raised awareness around domestic violence issues, prompting authorities to remind individuals in distress to reach out for help. Anyone needing assistance can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233 in the U.S.
