A captivating blue spiral illuminated the night sky across Europe on March 24, 2023, prompting awe and speculation among viewers from the UK to Poland. The phenomenon, identified by weather specialists and scientists, was attributed to the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The UK's Met Office confirmed on social media that it received numerous reports about the “illuminated swirl” in the sky. The swirl occurred as the rocket's first-stage booster separated, venting leftover frozen fuel that formed a spiral shape due to its tumbling motion. “These crystals caught the sunlight, creating the bright spiral pattern in the sky,” said James O'Donoghue, planetary scientist at the UK’s University of Reading, according to information shared by SCMP.

Social media platforms were flooded with images and videos of the phenomena across several nations, including France, Germany, and Denmark. Users expressed their fascination with the unexpected light show, with some likening it to iconic science fiction scenes, as noted by the Los Angeles Times.

This beautiful spiraling display was part of SpaceX’s NROL-69 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office, which handles US military satellite launches. The mission's payload is classified, but the successful launch showcased SpaceX's prominent role in global space exploration.

Such spiral displays aren't entirely unprecedented; a similar vortex was noted over New Zealand in 2022, indicating a pattern linked to the high frequency of SpaceX's launches. O'Donoghue emphasized that the venting process from the rocket is not hazardous and can occur with different types of rockets. The successful and dramatic reveals of such phenomena illustrate the technological advancements SpaceX continues to achieve.
