Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed optimism following a recent discussion with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort, emphasizing their shared goals for the city during Trump's upcoming second term. Bowser described the meeting as “great,” where both leaders focused on the aspiration for Washington, D.C. to be “the best, most beautiful city in the world,” reflecting national strength, as reported by The Hill.

Held on December 31, the meeting lasted approximately 45 minutes and was arranged at Bowser's request. Acknowledging their tumultuous history, Bowser stated that she and Trump discussed critical areas for collaboration between local and federal governments, particularly concerning the city's federal workforce, underutilized federal buildings, parks, and infrastructure needs.“I am optimistic that we will continue to find common ground with the President during his second term,” Bowser noted in her statement, as detailed by Reuters.

This is not the first encounter between the two; they previously met in 2016 to discuss his first transition into the presidency. However, their relationship soured during Trump's tenure, particularly amid the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, where Bowser famously denounced Trump's heavy-handed approach. As tensions flared, he criticized her management of D.C. and expressed intentions to federalize control over the city.

Despite the past adversities, Bowser reiterated her commitment to fostering a non-divisive partnership, focusing on initiatives that will enhance the district's infrastructure.
