  • Filipina Alexandra Eala eliminates Madison Keys in a surprising Miami Open upset.
  • Iga Swiatek advances with a decisive win over Elise Mertens.
  • Eala has now defeated two Grand Slam champions in this tournament.

In an exhilarating turn of events at the Miami Open, 19-year-old Alexandra Eala pulled off a stunning upset against Australian Open champion Madison Keys, winning 6-4, 6-2. With this victory, Eala made history as the first woman from the Philippines to defeat a top-10 player since 1975, having previously knocked out 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko in the second round. Eala, currently ranked 140th in the world, has not lost a set in this tournament.

“I’m just in disbelief,” Eala expressed in an interview. “I knew I could win from the start... I think my belief and the trust I had in myself is what pushed me through,” she added. Trained at the Rafael Nadal Academy since the age of 13, Eala aims to elevate Filipino tennis through her accomplishments.

In the women’s draw, former champion and second seed Iga Swiatek also advanced to the last 16 by defeating Elise Mertens 7-6(2), 6-1, making her the first player to reach the last 16 in 25 consecutive WTA 1000 events. "I'm happy to close it in two sets," Swiatek noted after her match, reflecting on her strong performance.

Up next, Eala will face Paula Badosa, seeded 10th, who secured her spot in the fourth round by beating Clara Tauson 6-3, 7-6. Meanwhile, Swiatek will take on Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who triumphed over the Czech 15th seed Karolina Muchova 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Other notable performances include Jessica Pegula's comeback win against Russian Anna Kalinskaya.
