In a significant diplomatic move, the United States has brokered an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to halt military operations in the Black Sea and against energy sites. Following three days of discussions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, both nations agreed to eliminate the use of force and ensure safe navigation, with the aim of restoring vital trade routes.

The White House released statements indicating both sides “agreed to ensure safe navigation, eliminate the use of force, and prevent the use of commercial vessels for military purposes.” However, the Kremlin quickly added conditions necessary for the deal to take effect, primarily focusing on lifting sanctions related to Russia’s agricultural exports. Russian President Vladimir Putin stipulated that the ceasefire would only commence once restrictions against key financial institutions, including the Russian Agricultural Bank, were removed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed cautious optimism regarding the ceasefire agreement but highlighted the ongoing challenges, especially in light of continued Russian attacks, which he described as a “clear signal” that Moscow might not pursue genuine peace. In fact, over 100 drones were launched by Russian forces shortly after the truce was announced, casting doubt on the sustainability of the agreement.
