A woman and prime suspect in the murder of a California fire captain has been apprehended in Mexico, according to authorities. Yolanda Olejniczak Marodi, 53, was arrested at a hotel in Mexicali and has since been transferred to U.S. marshals in San Diego, where she will be formally booked on charges of murder.

The investigation revolves around the tragic death of her wife, Rebecca Marodi, a 49-year-old Cal Fire captain, who was killed on February 17 at their home in Ramona, California. Reports indicate that the couple had been married for slightly more than two years. Olejniczak Marodi had been a fugitive since the incident, with authorities believing she fled to Mexico shortly after the crime.

According to the Los Angeles Times, security footage recovered from the couple's home allegedly captured the moments before the stabbing, showing a heated argument between the two that escalated into violence. Witnesses state that Olejniczak Marodi was seen physically assaulting Rebecca. In distressing footage, Rebecca could be heard pleading, “Yolanda! Please.. I don't want to die!” as the attack unfolded.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office reported that after the attack, Olejniczak was spotted loading items and pets into her vehicle before crossing the border into Mexico only about an hour post-incident. Officials noted that the investigation into Marodi’s murder continues as they gather evidence.

Conflict is not new for Olejniczak Marodi, as she previously served nearly a decade in prison after being convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the fatal stabbing of her ex-husband in 2003. This alarming history is drawing additional scrutiny as she now faces murder charges for another homicide.

The ability to apprehend Olejniczak Marodi was made possible through cooperative efforts between Mexican and U.S. authorities, highlighting the importance of such collaborations in tackling cross-border crimes. For ongoing updates about this case, check out ABC News, SFGate, and LA Times.
