Pope Francis Leaves Hospital After Five-Week Fight Against Pneumonia

Credited from: BBC

Pope Francis returned to the Vatican on Sunday after spending five weeks in Rome's Gemelli Hospital to recover from a serious bout of pneumonia. This hospitalization has marked the longest period of time the pontiff has been out of public view since his election, bringing deep concern among his followers worldwide.

During the hospital stay, the 88-year-old pope faced significant health challenges, which included being fitted with a non-invasive ventilation mask due to respiratory crises. His condition drastically improved, allowing for his release. Just before his discharge, the pontiff addressed a crowd of well-wishers from a hospital balcony, where he expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you, everyone!” He acknowledged a woman holding yellow flowers and appeared visibly frail yet in good spirits.

“His presence today is emotional; it's a reflection of the hope he brings,” said one of the attendees outside the hospital. The crowd erupted with chants of “Viva il Papa!” as the Pope waved at them from his wheelchair. Despite his recovery, doctors have advised him to avoid meeting large groups for at least two months as he continues rehabilitation.

Pope Francis was admitted on February 14, initially due to bronchitis that worsened, leading to pneumonia in both lungs. This prolonged illness raised questions about his health and discussions about potential succession but ultimately reaffirmed his resolve to continue serving as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

As the pontiff prepares to recuperate at home, there remains uncertainty over his immediate involvement in major church events, including an upcoming audience with King Charles III and the planned Easter celebrations.

Despite health concerns, the ongoing Jubilee Year celebrations at the Vatican have attracted hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, highlighting the unwavering support for Pope Francis during his recovery.
