Tesla Faces Major Setback with Recall of Over 46,000 Cybertrucks

Credited from: BUSINESSINSIDER

Tesla is recalling more than 46,000 Cybertruck vehicles in the United States due to a significant safety risk involving an exterior panel that can potentially detach while driving, according to announcements made on March 20 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This recall encompasses virtually all Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025, and marks Tesla's eighth recall for this model since it was launched in late 2023. The problematic part is known as the cant rail assembly, a stainless steel trim panel that runs along the vehicle and may detach, posing a road hazard and increasing the risk of accidents.

The NHTSA identified the cant rail's potential to delaminate and become dislodged while in motion, citing that it is mounted using a structural adhesive that has proven vulnerable to environmental conditions. Although Tesla reported that only about 1 percent of the recalled vehicles are likely affected by this issue, they have opted to recall all units as a precautionary measure to ensure driver safety. Tesla will replace the problematic panel assembly at no cost to the vehicle owners, with notifications set to be mailed starting May 19.

In recent months, Tesla has seen its stock values plummet by approximately 42%, partly due to the backlash against CEO Elon Musk's high-profile engagements in government policy under the Trump administration and the company’s challenges with product quality and market competition. Previous recalls for the Cybertruck have involved several safety concerns, including malfunctioning windshield wipers and issues with acceleration pedals.

Public sentiment against the company has been galvanized further by incidents of vandalism and violent protests aimed at Tesla properties, as some individuals express their discontent regarding Musk's leadership and corporate practices. As a result, some Tesla showrooms and vehicles have become targets for protests that include graffiti and arson, highlighting the ongoing unrest surrounding the brand. Tesla has yet to report any accidents or injuries linked to the panel detachment issue, but they have been proactive in addressing customer complaints, with over 150 warranty claims filed relative to the matter, which they first identified in January.
