Six migrants have been confirmed dead and around 40 are reported missing after a tragic shipwreck involving an inflatable dinghy in the Mediterranean Sea near the Italian island of Africanews.
The vessel, which had departed from Tunisia’s port of Sfax carrying 56 individuals including those from Ivory Coast, Mali, Guinea, and Cameroon, began to deflate shortly after setting sail. According to Le Monde, statements from survivors revealed that some had fallen overboard due to rough sea conditions, leading to the fatalities.
The Italian coastguard has successfully rescued 10 individuals, including several women, who are now receiving psychological support, as search efforts continue, aided by aircraft from the European border agency Frontex. These operations are being conducted under adverse weather, prompting the involvement of various agencies in the search mission.
This incident has raised alarms, as the UNHCR has noted that over 31,500 people have gone missing or died in the Mediterranean since 2014. Approximately 8,963 migrants have arrived in Italy this year, indicating a 4% increase compared to the previous year, as stated by the Interior Ministry.
The situation highlights the urgent need for improved search and rescue operations in one of the world's most perilous maritime migration routes, a sentiment echoed by the UNHCR officials urging countries to strengthen their maritime policies.
