At least 12 people have died and 45 others have been injured in a tragic bus accident that occurred early Tuesday on a highway near Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport.

The bus, transporting passengers from the township of Katlehong, overturned, resulting in many passengers being ejected from the vehicle. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, as a spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Emergency Management, William Nthladi, stated, "On arrival we found patients lying across the road." Tragically, 12 individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.

Reports indicate that the bus was approaching its exit when the driver lost control, and no other vehicles were implicated in the incident. Local authorities are currently treating the accident site as a crime scene while they investigate the cause of the crash. "We are lost for words. This is a disaster," said city councilor Andile Mngwevu, expressing the community's deep sorrow following the incident.

Despite ongoing investigations, early indications suggest that speed may have played a role, although authorities have yet to confirm it. The vehicle was filled with personal belongings, underscoring the tragic nature of the accident.
