Elon Musk's social media platform X, formerly Twitter, faced severe outages on Monday, impacting thousands of users throughout the US and UK. More than 40,000 users reported issues with accessing the platform via Reuters, with complaints peaking around 10 a.m. EDT.
The outage began early in the morning, with users reporting glitches as early as 5:30 a.m. By 6 a.m., the number of outage reports skyrocketed, leading Musk to assert that the platform was under a "massive cyberattack." He suggested that the attack might involve a coordinated effort from a group or even a nation, noting, "We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources" Forbes.
As the outage unfolded, many users encountered loading issues on both the app and desktop versions. The website Downdetector, which tracks service interruptions based on user reports, confirmed that the issues were significant. Reports of outages decreased momentarily but surged again shortly after 11 a.m., indicating persistent technical difficulties for numerous users.
A Netblocks director commented that the situation aligns with previous denial-of-service attacks and that the duration of these outages was amongst the longest observed. X has a history of experiencing technical glitches, especially after Musk's acquisition in 2022, but this particular incident drew particular attention due to Musk's claims of a cyberattack BBC.
