The Department of Homeland Security is cracking down on leaks regarding immigration operations by administering polygraph tests to its personnel, confirmed DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. In an aggressive move, Noem, who aims to uphold President Trump's strict immigration policies, declared that the tests are vital for ensuring national security and operational integrity. "The Department of Homeland Security is a national security agency,” spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin emphasized the importance of these measures.
In a recent announcement, Noem stated that two employees identified as "criminal leakers" will face felony prosecutions by the Department of Justice, potentially leading to prison terms of up to ten years. The objective is clear: mitigate risks associated with unauthorized disclosures that could compromise law enforcement operations. She noted that “their job is dangerous enough” and emphasized the serious nature of these disclosures.
Apart from enforcing polygraph tests, Noem also unveiled two new leadership appointments within ICE: Todd Lyons as acting director and Madison Sheahan as deputy director. These changes reflect a commitment to accelerating the pace of deportations which, according to sources, has been hampered in part by internal leaks regarding planned operations, as reported by LA Times and SCMP.
As part of her broader strategy, Noem asserted, “I plan to use every single one of [my authorities] to make sure that we’re following the law,” indicating a firm approach to both operational efficiency and legal compliance.
The administration continues to position itself against immigration-related crimes with a renewed focus on transparency and accountability for every stakeholder involved, ensuring that the public and law enforcement alike benefit from these stringent measures.
