On Saturday, New York's Long Island was beset by fast-moving brush fires that prompted Governor Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency. The fires have affected a large area, particularly around the Pine Barrens region and forced evacuations, including that of a military base due to the escalating blaze. Governor Hochul assured that state agencies are diligently working to combat the fires and protect at-risk communities.
The intense fire conditions were exacerbated by low humidity levels and gusty winds, with authorities noting that these factors have complicated containment efforts. As reported by India Times, videos shared across social media displayed towering plumes of smoke across the region. The National Guard has been deployed to assist, with helicopters dropping water on the flames.
As the emergency unfolded, the New York State Police closed sections of the Sunrise Highway, a major route to the Hamptons, effectively restricting access as firefighters worked diligently to control the blazes. Governor Hochul emphasized public safety, stating, “This is still out of control at this moment,” highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Reports indicated that out of the four active fires, three had been fully contained while efforts continued to subdue the blaze in Westhampton, which was approximately 50% under control. Two commercial buildings suffered partial damage, but thankfully, none of the nearby residential structures were reported as being in immediate danger. One firefighter has been hospitalized for burns sustained while battling the infernos.
The New York Times noted that officials warned against recreational fires, given the heightened wildfire risk, as citizens were urged to exercise extreme caution.
