Authorities responded to a reported “active shooter situation” at Corry Station, a naval installation in Pensacola, Florida, earlier today. Initial reports indicated gunfire, prompting significant law enforcement involvement. However, subsequent investigations revealed no signs of an actual shooting.
The Escambia County Sheriff's Office received a call around 10:15 a.m. about an “armed disturbance”, citing that multiple shots had been fired. This led to a swift response from both Naval Security Forces of NAS Pensacola and local law enforcement agencies. Upon thorough investigation, officials confirmed there were no victims or evidence of an active shooter.
Captain Chandra Newman emphasized the commitment to safety in a statement shared on social media, acknowledging the prompt response of the security team. “Our concern is always the safety and welfare of our service members and their families,” she noted, illustrating the tension this incident caused in the community.
The gates at Corry Station and the main entrances to NAS Pensacola were temporarily closed during the security sweep but have since been reopened. The base's public visitation remained restricted past noon as a precautionary measure.
Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons confirmed the situation was resolved and reassured the public while ensuring continued vigilance. “Law enforcement has reported that there are no signs of an active shooter, and the area is determined ALL CLEAR,” the sheriff’s office stated in an update.
Corry Station plays a crucial role as a training facility for the Navy's Information Warfare Corps. This incident underscores the need for heightened security awareness following previous security breaches at naval installations.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing safety concerns at military establishments, particularly following the tragic shooting at NAS Pensacola in December 2019, which claimed the lives of three sailors.
