A Chinese PhD student, Zhenhao Zou, was found guilty on March 5 by a court in London of drugging and raping ten women in both Britain and China. The jury deliberated for over 19 hours before reaching a verdict, convicting Zou of 11 counts of rape, including two related to the same victim, as reported by BBC and SCMP.
The attacks took place from 2019 to 2023, with jurors identifying three rapes occurring in London and seven in China. Zou reportedly filmed nine of the assaults as a form of "souvenir" and possessed a trophy box of women's belongings. His trial at Inner London Crown Court revealed that many victims appeared unconscious in the footage, leading to an outcry over the trauma inflicted upon them, according to LA Times and CNA.
Police highlighted the chilling possibility that there may be more than 50 unreported victims, rendering Zou as one of the most notorious sex offenders in UK history. Using dating apps, Zou seduced his victims before drugging them, according to India Times.
During his trial, Zou presented as the intellectual type, with the prosecution describing him as a clever but manipulative predator, masking his predatory nature under a guise of charm. The case has drawn significant media attention in both the UK and China, inciting public outrage and demands for justice, particularly from the Chinese community who are horrified by his actions. The judge labeled Zou a "dangerous and predatory sexual offender," stating his sentence would be inevitable and severe.
As Zhenhao Zou awaits sentencing on June 19, the community continues to grapple with the evidence presented during the trial, with advocates urging anyone who suspects they may have also fallen victim to come forward.
