KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Andrew Lester, an 86-year-old man from Missouri, has died just days after pleading guilty to second-degree assault stemming from the 2023 shooting of Ralph Yarl, a Black teenager who mistakenly rang his doorbell. The announcement was made by the Clay County Prosecutor's Office on Wednesday, following Lester's guilty plea on February 14, 2025.

Lester faced legal repercussions after shooting Yarl twice — once in the forehead and once in the arm — on April 13, 2023. The incident took place as Yarl attempted to pick up his younger siblings from a friend's house located nearby. Initially charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action, Lester entered a plea that carried a possible sentence of seven years. He was scheduled for sentencing on March 7, 2025.

In a statement, the prosecutor's office expressed condolences to Lester's family and acknowledged his admission of guilt: “While the legal proceedings have now concluded, we acknowledge that Mr. Lester did take responsibility for his actions by pleading guilty in this case,” they stated, according to USA Today.
