In a recent interview on The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, Guy Pearce opened up about his troubling experiences while filming the 1997 neo-noir film L.A. Confidential. Pearce claimed he was “targeted” by Kevin Spacey during their time together on set, stating that he felt both “uncomfortable” and “scared” due to Spacey's behavior. Although Pearce was not sexually assaulted, he conveyed deep emotional impacts, recalling that he felt a lack of safety except when fellow co-star Simon Baker was present. “The only days I feel safe are the days when [Simon Baker] is on set,” he explained.
Pearce's realization regarding the severity of his experiences did not come until years later, particularly during the #MeToo movement. In 2017, after hearing fresh allegations against Spacey, Pearce broke down, acknowledging that he had minimized the situation at the time. "I was in London working on something, and I heard [the reports] and I broke down and sobbed," he reflected.
Despite Pearce's candidness about feeling targeted, Spacey responded sharply to these allegations. In a video posted on social media (formerly Twitter), he told Pearce to “grow up” and suggested he wasn't a true victim. Spacey stated, "If I did something then that upset you, you could have reached out to me,” and accused Pearce of misleading the public and ignoring their previous contact since filming.
This conflict illustrates the broader conversation within Hollywood about sexual misconduct and accountability. Spacey, who has denied all allegations, was acquitted in recent trials, but his career remains in tatters since the allegations surfaced in 2017. Pearce emphasized that while his experience was troubling, it paled in comparison to the suffering experienced by others who have faced severe harassment or abuse.
While both actors have distinct perspectives on their interactions, Pearce's emotional recollections and Spacey's blunt dismissal highlight ongoing tensions regarding accountability and acknowledgment in Hollywood’s treatment of such serious matters.
