Key takeaways:

  • Trump suggests that the 75-day delay for TikTok's ban might be extended.
  • He credits TikTok for appealing to young voters and impacting his 2024 election campaign.
  • The app's uncertain future is tied to national security concerns over its Chinese ownership.
  • Trump believes Chinese officials would favor a U.S. acquisition of TikTok.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that he is considering the possibility of extending the 75-day delay imposed on enforcing a ban for TikTok, the widely-used short-video application. In a news briefing in the Oval Office, Trump expressed optimism about finalizing a deal that would allow TikTok to continue operating in the United States, attributing part of his strategy in the upcoming 2024 presidential election campaign to the app's influence on young voters.

The status of TikTok remains in limbo following a law enacted on January 19, mandating its Chinese parent company ByteDance to either divest or face prohibition due to national security concerns. In reaction to this law, Trump had signed an executive order allowing for a 75-day postponement of the ban's enforcement. When asked about the impending deadline, he commented, "I have 90 days from about two weeks ago, and I’m sure it can be extended," although he indicated that such an extension may not be necessary.

Furthermore, Trump highlighted his belief that there is significant interest among potential buyers for the app. He emphasized that establishing a deal could also serve China's interests, suggesting that negotiations with Chinese President Xi Jinping could facilitate the sale of TikTok to a U.S. company.Source, Source.
