Sean "Diddy" Combs has initiated a $100 million defamation lawsuit against NBCUniversal, its streaming service Peacock, and Ample Entertainment. Combs claims the documentary titled Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy disseminates false information that paints him as a serial killer and a rapist of minors, allegations he has strongly denied.
The documentary, which premiered on January 14, has been criticized by Combs' legal team as being filled with misleading statements and "outrageous conspiracy theories" that the defendants knew to be false or published with reckless disregard for the truth. The lawsuit asserts that the film portrays Combs as a "monster" comparable to Jeffrey Epstein and alleges he was involved in crimes of serial murder and sex trafficking, accusations that have no foundation in his current legal battles, which involve three federal charges: racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and violating the Mann Act.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the premise of the documentary hinges on the insinuation that Combs is responsible for the deaths of notable figures in his circle, such as Kim Porter, the mother of three of his children, and The Notorious B.I.G. While Combs has always denied such allegations, the documentary allegedly presents these claims without credible evidence, causing severe reputational harm.
According to Forbes, Combs is currently facing over 40 civil suits connected to sexual abuse and harassment, with a trial set for May 5 on federal charges. His legal team argues that the documentary could adversely affect a fair trial given the serious nature of the allegations against him.
In the lawsuit, Combs’ attorney, Erica Wolff, emphasized that the documentary serves no purpose but to profit from falsehoods while jeopardizing Combs's constitutional right to Trial by jury, calling on the court to hold NBC accountable for its damaging statements. The complaint also highlights that NBC was made aware in December of the inaccuracies in the film, yet chose to promote it anyway.
As the controversy unfolds, Combs remains steadfast in his denial of all allegations and has declared his intention to fight back in court, claiming that the truth will ultimately prevail amidst the swirling allegations of misconduct.
