U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to announce a significant escalation in trade policy, revealing his intention to impose 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States. This announcement is scheduled for Monday, and comes alongside plans for reciprocal tariffs expected to follow on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Speaking aboard Reuters' Air Force One, Trump emphasized the need for such measures to ensure fair competition. "If they charge us, we charge them… every country," he declared, indicating a strong stance against countries charging high tariffs on U.S. goods. Previously, he had imposed 25% tariffs on steel and 10% on aluminum during his first term but granted several partners, including Canada and Mexico, duty-free quotas later on.

As he progresses with this new round of tariffs, CBS News reported that last week's decisions included a pause on threats to impose 25% tariffs on certain imports. Nonetheless, Trump remains committed to using tariffs as a tool to support domestic manufacturing and combat illegal immigration.

The administration has not yet finalized the list of countries that will face reciprocal tariffs, as highlighted in a recent report by VOA News, but this upcoming announcement is another chapter in a series of trade policy changes aimed at fostering U.S. industry.
