The U.K.'s beloved feline diplomat, Palmerston, is back in action, emerging from retirement to take on a new role as the chief four-legged representative in Bermuda. The news, announced Wednesday via Palmerston's official DiploMog account, marks a charming continuation of his unique contributions to British diplomacy after a four-year hiatus.
Originally retiring to a "quieter and easier" life in the countryside, Palmerston found a new purpose alongside his adoptive owner, Andrew Murdoch, who has been appointed the governor of Bermuda. In a playful tweet, Palmerston declared, “Diplomacy and a purr-fect role have lured me out of retirement. I’ve just started work as feline relations consultant (semi-retired) to the new Governor of Bermuda. I’ve been busy meeting very welcoming Bermudians,” highlighting the whimsical nature of this appointment.
The Foreign Office reassured fans that Palmerston will only attend meetings he finds noteworthy, yet he will still indulge in "well-earned naps," staying true to his laid-back persona. Palmerston's journey began in April 2016 when he was adopted as a rescue cat, quickly becoming a cherished figure at the Foreign Office.
Over the years, he had a notorious rivalry with Larry, the Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office at 10 Downing Street. The two felines were known for their public antics, often seen tussling outside the prime minister’s residence. Larry has held his position since 2011 and continues to oversee his duties while Palmerston embarks on this new chapter.
