Former Brazil and Real Madrid defender Marcelo announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36, closing a remarkable chapter defined by an impressive collection of trophies. Having spent 15 seasons at Real Madrid from 2007 to 2022, Marcelo lifted a total of 25 major trophies, including five Champions League titles and six La Liga championships.
Known for his attacking prowess as a left-back, Marcelo made an indelible mark in the sport. He was instrumental in Real Madrid's historic run, scoring in the crucial 2014 Champions League final that secured the club's long-awaited tenth title, referred to as "La Decima". His contributions helped the club achieve dominance in European football, as they won three consecutive Champions League trophies between 2015 and 2018, making him one of the most decorated players in history.
In a heartfelt message shared via AP News, Marcelo reflected, “My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give football. Thank you for everything.” His leadership skills culminated in his appointment as club captain in 2021, a rare honor for a non-Spaniard.
After departing Real Madrid, Marcelo briefly joined Greek club Olympiacos before returning to his roots at Brazilian club Fluminense, where he also won the Copa Libertadores in 2023. Over his illustrious career, he represented Brazil 58 times, earning a Confederations Cup title and jewel medals in the Olympics.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez shared a tribute to Marcelo, stating, “He is one of the greatest left backs in the history of Real Madrid and world football.”
