The US Open has made headlines as the first major golf tournament to offer exemptions for players from the LIV Golf circuit. The United States Golf Association (USGA) revealed that for the upcoming U.S. Open, which will take place from June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club, a spot will be awarded to the top-ranked LIV golfer who is not already exempt, as of the standings on May 19, 2025. Additionally, starting in 2026, the exemption will expand to allow two players from the LIV Golf Individual Standings to compete.

This decision reflects a significant move towards reconciliation between the USGA and the Saudi-backed LIV circuit, which launched in 2022. John Bodenhamer, the USGA's chief championships officer, highlighted the organization's ongoing efforts to evaluate talent levels across various professional tours, stating, “The USGA continues to evaluate the pathways that exist to ensure those playing their best have the opportunity to compete in our national championship.”

The 2025 U.S. Open will see one spot for LIV players, and in subsequent years, this will increase to two, based on their performance. Currently, golfers like Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, and Bryson DeChambeau have exemptions for the U.S. Open due to past performances in major championships.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil expressed his enthusiasm for the new pathway, stating, “Every golf fan in the world longs to see the greatest players in the world competing on golf's biggest stages at the majors.” This response signifies the league's commitment to collaborating with golf's governing bodies to enhance the sport globally.

Previously, LIV players were eligible to participate in majors but lacked an official channel for qualification. Other major tournaments like the Masters and the PGA Championship have offered special invitations to LIV players based on rankings or past achievements, with Joaquin Niemann being one notable recipient confirmed for the Masters in April.

This step from the USGA may open the floodgates for LIV golfers, allowing them a more structured entry into prestigious events rated among the highest in international golf.
